The brain is the ultimate control center of our entire bodily system. It sends signals to various parts of the body so that we can talk, walk, breathe, smell, and problem solve. It helps us to regulate our emotions so that we can truly experience happy moments as well as handle the difficult situations that are thrown our way. We can always use more tips to improve brain power.
Consciously or not, we are constantly learning new things every day. We may need to recall prior knowledge and apply it in a new way or perhaps learn entirely new information so we can progress in life.
Either way, in order to live with purpose and up to our best potential, we must take care of our brains. It also should be noted that studies have shown that brain issues once previously thought irreversible can indeed be improved. Let’s explore a few tips to improve brain power that can be easily incorporated into your everyday life.
#1. Dress with Thought
Studies have shown that when you dress more formally – we aren’t talking a suit and tie but forego the sweatpants and hoodies – we can think more conceptually.
I work in a fairly relaxed atmosphere where there is not a formal dress code. However, I do choose to dress more formally and with a conscious effort. I find that not only do other individuals treat me differently, but I also carry myself differently.
A few years ago I broke my wrist and was in a cast. I was forced to dress in yoga pants and hoodies for 2 months. At first, I was thrilled! However, I slowly found that my energy levels decreased and I was no longer engaging as fully with others.
#2. Walk – Simply Walk
We are all aware of the importance of exercise for our physical bodies. It helps to keep our muscles strong and flexible. But did you know that it also releases endorphins that help to reduce anxiety and even manage depression without medications?
Exercise also puts our brains into a state of neuroplasticity. This means that our brains begin to form and reorganize connections between our synapses. Consequently, we are able to learn more and better, even following an injury.
So take a walk around your neighborhood – not only is it good for your brain but you are also exposing yourself to new environments, different people, and even other opportunities to learn something interesting.
#3. Stop Using Search Engines For Everything!
I grew up before as my mother calls it, “The Google”. Information was not always instantly at my fingertips and I often had to have a plan as to how I would gather the information that I required. This took a fair amount of effort and thus more brainpower.
However, in the technological age that we find ourselves in, we can simply type in a few chosen words and VOILA, we have more information than we even know what to do with. It is instantaneous and requires little to no effort. In fact, you barely need to even know how to spell what you are looking for as the search engine will correct it for you.
Come up with something new you would like to know more about. Sure, you can Google it and find all the information immediately but challenge yourself.
Look for other sources of information like books or better yet, people who are experts about your topic. It will push your brain to be more actively involved and thus more engaged in your learning.
You will also find that your ability to actually retain and apply the information will increase as you have to put forth more effort to gain it. As this is one of the tips to improve brain power that requires a fair amount of effort, you may also reap the largest rewards from it.
#4. Eat a Mediterranean Diet
It has been proven that foods high in Vitamin E can help to maintain a healthy brain. A Mediterranean diet originated in Greece and Italy and is composed mainly of olives and olive oil, nuts, legumes, and fruits and vegetables. The main meat source is fish.
Especially in the Western Hemisphere, the diet of many people includes red meat and processed foods that are high in fat, sugar, and salt.
By switching to a Mediterranean diet, you may first find it difficult to stop craving the sugar and salt but eventually, you will begin to see changes in your body but also in your cognitive processing.
#5. Practice Yoga
Over the past few years, yoga has grown in popularity across the world. Not only is it fabulous in terms of increasing your flexibility, but it is also known to improve a person’s memory and ability to concentrate.

#6. Remove Electronics from the Bedroom
We are in an age where we are bombarded with technology every hour of the day. Many of us are figuratively chained to our phones and laptops and it is impeding our ability to get a good night’s sleep.
Once we learn to relax and sleep well, our brains have the opportunity to make connections about the day and what we already have learned.
#7. Avoid Multitasking
Our lives are busy, probably busier than they ever should be. Many of us are trying to accomplish a multitude of tasks all at the same time. As a result, our brains (and our bodies for that matter) are unable to keep up. Learning becomes jumbled and often confused, we forget important things and make more mistakes. In the end, our productivity is decreased.
Focus on one task at a time. This way, your brain is able to make the connections between the new information and prior knowledge which can then be applied effectively in the future.
Personally, I have found this to be one of the most useful tips to improve brain power.
Using the previously mentioned tips to improve brain power may not make you a genius but it can definitely lead to improved memory and overall better capacity to learn.
