Foods to Eat for a Clear Complexion

Your skin is the largest organ in your body and needs to be taken care of.  This goes far beyond keeping it moisturized or applying sunscreen on a sunny day.  We must also consider that there are certain foods to eat for a clear complexion.

Our skin is composed of three layers – the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis.  The epidermis is the outermost layer and provides us with protection against excess moisture (yep!  It’s waterproof!) and gives us our skin tone. The dermis is below the epidermis and contains sweat glands, hair follicles, and tough connective tissue.  Finally, the deepest layer is the hypodermis which is made of fat and connective tissues. All three layers are affected by what we ingest.

I would like you to think back on the past 4-5 days and examine what foods you ate.  Then also look at the condition of your skin. It should be clear, soft to the touch, not flaky or dry.  Read further to see if what you have been eating has been impacting the condition of your skin.

Keeping our immune system healthy will also keep our skin healthy as well.  When our immune system is strong, it can fight off infection, including those attacking our skin.  Therefore, if you want healthy, glowing skin try eating the following foods.

#1. Fruits

Eating fruits, in general, is great for your body but amazing for your skin.  They often contain large amounts of water which is great for keeping you hydrated and keeping your skin supple.  We all know we are supposed to drink about 8 glasses of water a day to prevent us from suffering the effects of dehydration and fruit definitely contributes to daily water intake.

Fruits also contain numerous vitamins and minerals crucial for vibrant skin.  Vitamin C found in citrus fruits and berries plays a significant role in creating collagen that keeps our skin strong.  Fruits are generally high in antioxidants as well and these contribute to less damage to your skin cells, resulting in a more youthful appearance with smoother skin and fewer wrinkles.

#2. Whole Grains

Whole grains like those found in whole wheat bread, rice, and pasta have gone through far less processing than those found in their white counterparts.  As a result, they contain higher levels of fiber which our body requires to flush out toxins.

I am fairly sure there is no one on this planet who never eats unhealthy food.  The high fiber content of whole grains assists our digestive systems to remove these toxins, leaving us with healthier-looking skin.

#3. Foods Containing Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 can be found in foods such as pork, fish, poultry, eggs, whole grains, milk, peanuts, and soya beans to name a few and therefore, are foods to eat for a clear complexion.  It helps the body to regulate hormonal imbalances that can cause acne and blotchy skin.

Hormonal imbalances can be caused by puberty, menstruation, and pregnancy.  Other factors like hormonal medications or stress can affect your body but foods rich in Vitamin B6 can help to reverse those effects.

#4. Foods Rich in Fatty Acids

Fat?  I thought we were supposed to avoid fatty foods at all costs.  Fatty acids are different. They contain Omega-3s and Omega-6s which are considered to be the building blocks of cell membranes.  The fats are polyunsaturated or the “good fats” which keeps your skin hydrated, plumper leading to a more youthful appearance.

Oily fish like mackerel, salmon, and cod are rich in fatty acids.  If you do not like fish, you can also try flax seeds, almonds, and chia seeds.  Personally, I eat chia seeds sprinkled in my whole grain oatmeal every day. It is an ancient grain that when exposed to a small amount of moisture creates a gel-like barrier around itself to keep you hydrated for longer periods of time and consequently, one of the foods to eat for a clear complexion.

So, therefore, those are the important foods to eat for clear skin but what about those foods that we should avoid?

The following is a list of foods that may be causing you to experience blotchiness or even premature aging of your skin.

  • Drinks High in Caffeine

Although those beverages high in caffeine like coffee, tea, sodas, and energy drinks may not directly cause acne or breakouts, they may actually make those episodes worse.  So if you are prone to developing acne, you may want to avoid caffeine.

Caffeine, as we are all aware, keeps us alert but it also leads to a greater stress response in the body.  Thus, the stress hormone cortisol is increased which increases the amount of oil produced by sebaceous glands.

  • Processed Foods

Processed foods like pre-packaged foods, deli meats, and fast food may taste delicious but not only are they bad for your brain, they will also leave your skin blotchy and puffy.  In order to preserve them and extend their shelf-life, highly processed foods are extremely loaded with salt.    So if you are trying to clear up your skin or remove excess salt from your body, avoid them as much as you can.

  • Sugary Foods

Sugary foods can raise your blood sugar levels which causes inflammation in the body.  As a result, your skin reacts with acne, blotchiness, and even premature aging. If you are already prone to a skin condition such as eczema, you may find that excess sugar from candy, desserts, and sodas can be even more damaging.

It is inevitable that your skin is directly impacted by what you put into your body on a regular basis.  If you are looking for clear and healthy-looking skin, make wise food choices. Always think carefully and choose the mentioned foods to eat for a clear complexion.

Choose those foods high in vitamins and minerals, and that generally closest to what Mother Nature has provided.  Those foods that are laden with preservatives and high in sugar or fat are generally nutritionally void and do not contribute anything to your overall skin health.  Feed your skin well and you will be rewarded with a younger, more youthful appearance.
