In order to be successful, there needs to be a lot of hard work put into a variety of tasks. However, if we are to maintain success and continue growing as individuals, we must also learn to care about ourselves as well. Self-care is extremely important if we are going to be at our best. The best habits of successful people allow them to continue to excel in their success and these habits can differ from person to person. So what can we do to make that self-care a priority on a regular basis without creating more work for ourselves?

#1. Make Time to Exercise

It is critical to be looking after your physical self if you are to be at your best. Your body must be strong and healthy in order for you to perform well.

Is it OK to have one of those lazy days to recuperate from a long week? Of course but if that is your method of resting, you will find that your body will become weaker and not able to respond as it once did as living a sedentary lifestyle can be dangerous.

There is no secret that exercise is vital to not only our physical health but also our mental health. It even helps us to cope with stress more easily. Exercise does not have to be a daily trip to the gym for two hours. It can be as simple as going for a simple walk every evening to clear your head or park at the end of the parking lot when you go get groceries.  The important thing is you are MOVING!

#2. Value The Importance of Alone Time

This is one of those things that has taken me a long time to realize. My profession involves helping people with some heavy personal issues at times, which I find can be physically and mentally draining. If I am to be ready for the upcoming work week, I know I must have some alone time to recharge.

For many years, I felt bad about this because it felt like I was avoiding my family and friends on the weekends. And if I did continue to surround myself with people on my days off, I was nowhere ready to be at my best in my career. So now, I make time to read with a good cup of coffee or spend some time in my painting room. It is all about balance and one of the best habits of successful people.

#3. Reward Yourself, But Not With Food

When you set goals for yourself and achieve them, you should reward yourself. However, many of us use food or alcohol as a reward. Unfortunately, it is usually not of the healthiest variety, which affects our physical well-being. Instead, choose activities like a massage or a day at the beach to treat yourself.

These are more responsible choices that will leave you feeling satisfied with your decisions.

#4. Schedule Self-Care

As I stated at the beginning of this article, success equals hard work and tasks that must be completed by a specific deadline. So, if you have an appointment with a new client or investor, you schedule it into your calendar to make sure you don’t miss it, right? Exactly.

It is because it is important to your success so you must do the same with your self-care. Schedule in those times to take care of yourself. It is just as important as that early morning meeting with your boss.

#5. The Word “NO” is Not a Bad Word

Do you feel guilty about using the word “NO”? You shouldn’t. Of course, there are times when you should not say “no”. However, there are definitely times when you should if you have too many things on your plate.

It is beneficial to set healthy boundaries with those around us. Sometimes it is important to make yourself a priority.

#6. Eat Healthily

Of course, we are all aware of the importance of eating nutritious foods to remain healthy. Find those foods that make your body feel vibrant and filled with energy. For example, chickpeas are filled with nutrition and even the everyday tomato can improve your health. However, we all know that a day comes around and that incessant craving for potato chips or a doughnut refuses to let us go. Indulge occasionally and do not feel guilty about it as eating 100% healthy all of the time is not realistic.

Keep in mind that this indulgence is not a reward nor should it be part of your regular diet. You are what you eat as the old saying goes and certain foods can even help to boost your brainpower.

Knowing some of the physical signs of dehydration is also crucial to keeping healthy and alert. Instead of reaching for a coffee or soda pop, have a glass of water – add a sliced cucumber for a refreshing twist.

#7. Be Creative

Creativity is in every single one of us and can take many forms. I recall during my school days being required to write a creative story. OMG! I think I would rather have washed out every toilet in my house than do that. I watched my friends have stories flow out of them like a running river and I felt like something was wrong with me.

Fast forward several years to when a colleague asked me to go to a weekend painting class with her. This is where I discovered a hidden talent I did not know I even possessed. Find something creative that brings you joy. It may be music or acting or art. Go out of your comfort zone a bit and begin discovering those hidden talents.

#8. Have Moments of Gratitude

Being grateful for what we already have goes hand in hand with being positive. It is always easier to focus on what we do not have or what we still want to achieve. However, take the time to sit back and reflect on what it is that you have accomplished and what you already have.

Changing your mindset to actively include moments of reflection and gratitude can alter your perspective on everything and is one of the best habits of successful people. Eventually, you will begin to see all of the amazing and fabulous things around you.

#9. Let Negativity Go

Being successful is all about having a positive mindset. When we hold onto the negativity in our life, we tend to attract more negativity. So LET IT GO!

If you are currently caught up in focusing on the negative things surrounding you, begin examining why you feel the need to do so.

  • Is getting upset about the slow driver ahead of you going to change anything?
  • Is getting annoyed about the way your kids fold the towels going to greatly affect your life?

Instead of focusing on the negativity, find the positive things surrounding you. It honestly is everywhere. Or if you find yourself tensing up about a trivial pet peeve, replace it with a new habit.

Force yourself to smile and realize that it will pass. Your mental and physical well-being will improve.

#10. Connect With Other People

We are all social beings. It is what makes us stand apart from the animals. Although it is indeed important to find some “me time”, it is also just as important to connect with your loved ones. Going out for lunch or a walk around the park with a friend or family member can give you that extra boost you so need.

It is also advantageous to network with people that you do not currently know. Go to events that you may not normally attend or perhaps even volunteer for a cause you are passionate about. It is surprising how invigorating that can be.

Being successful can sometimes be a tough process and the mountain to greater achievements appears to be impossible to climb. Remember that changing some of your habits to the best habits of successful people listed in this article as well as working on your self-esteem can provide you with the tools needed to make that climb.
